Spring is officially here, and even though the temperatures haven't embraced the new season, it's still a fantastic time to begin planning your garden.
Our real estate agents know that a well-kept garden also makes a property more appealing to potential buyers. Follow these tips to get your gardening prep started.
1. Remove Weeds, Debris, and Dead Vegetation
Mild spring temperatures make it an excellent time to handle some housekeeping for your lawn and flowerbeds. Use a rake to remove old leaves, grass lumps, and any other items that don't belong in your yard. Remove any weeds and bag them for disposal so that they don't have a chance to spread their spores. If you're planning to seed your lawn, hold off on using a commercial weedkilling product, as you don't want to expose new grass to weed control products for at least four weeks. While removing old mulch is usually not necessary, if it's starting to reach the borders of your gardens and overflow, you may want to remove some for spatial reasons if you plan on adding a fresh layer.
2. Prune Your Trees or Shrubs
Early spring is a terrific time to prune many varieties of trees and shrubs because the bare branches allow you to better see what you're pruning. Plants that bloom on new wood (like butterfly bushes, flowering dogwoods, roses, and crepe myrtles) are usually safe to prune in the spring. However, species that bloom on old wood (such as azaleas and magnolias) should be pruned after they bloom. After pruning, add a bit of fertilizer to the soil so that the tree or brush has the nutrients it needs to recuperate. If you're adding your home to the list of

3. Set Up New Planters and Garden Beds
If you're ready to expand your garden or add more plants to your deck or patio, now is the time to build your new garden beds and purchase and set up additional planters. When it's time to add your plants or plant your seedlings, your spaces will be ready to use.
4. Declutter and Organize Your Storage Shed
You need to be able to find your gardening tools and know what products you already have on hand. Get rid of items that are broken or that you don't use, and add hooks and shelves to arrange the remaining tools neatly. If you're low on fertilizer, potting soil, or other gardening products, add them to your list of items to buy so that you have everything you need when it's time to plant your garden. Check the blades on your gardening tools to confirm that they're sharp. If they're dull, you can use a mill file to sharpen them.
5. Add Mulch to Your Gardens
You can add fresh mulch to your gardens before the growing season begins. A layer of mulch that's at least two inches thick will even prevent new weed spores from germinating. Once your garden is in place, mulch will help your soil retain moisture and allow it to hold more nutrients. A little bit of preparation ensures that you have everything ready when it's time to plant and tend to your gardens. Looking for a home with a bigger yard to plant a larger garden?
