5 Places for Bird Watching Around Central PA

CENTURY 21 Mertz & Associates June 10, 2021

As you shop for a home in Central Pennsylvania, you're likely to become enthralled by the landscape: low mountain ridges, the many wooded areas with stunning fall foliage, as well as the broad, shallow waters of the Susquehanna River. Nestled in the scenery, you may find just the right home from Lewisburg homes for sale, or perhaps in the surrounding area. Regardless of where you end up, our real estate agents highly recommend visiting the local parks and wilder trails for a little birdwatching — recently noted in The New York Times as surging in popularity since the pandemic.

1. Bald Eagle State Park - 149 Main Park Road, Howard PA

As the name implies, you can glimpse a majestic bald eagle here. But you can also see many other species, all the way down to the small, drab but distinctively marked worm-eating warbler (it gets its name from feasting on caterpillars). Also spot magnificent predators in forests; colorful and diverse water and shorebirds in the marshes and lakes; and in the meadows, the ruffed grouse and wild turkey. You're just 40 miles from this rich habitat when you settle in Millmont homes for sale.

2. Dale's Ridge Trail - 1471 Strawbridge Road, off Route 192, Lewisburg PA

Just 3.5 miles west of the home you've been looking at among Lewisburg homes for sale, Dale's Ridge Trail borders Buffalo Creek and overlooks a variety of habitats: streams and ponds, a hemlock grove, a white pine grove, second-growth hardwood forest, meadows, woodlots, and open fields. It's a small area but has a large bird list of around 50 species. During fall migrations, warblers noted were Blackburnian, magnolia, black-throated blue, blackpoll, and black-throated green.

3. Shamokin Mountain Trail - Forest House Lane, Union Township PA

Take some time off from shopping for your dream home among Sunbury homes for sale by visiting the Shamokin Mountain Trail. You may glimpse the spectacular scarlet tanager in the summer or during migration periods (spring and fall), or see the courtship display of the American woodcock, performed aerially in the spring. Small habitats like this are of great importance to declining migratory bird species. From Sunbury, you're less than 10 miles away from State Game Lands No. 193 and Shamokin Mountain Trail.

4. Milton State Park - 205 PA-642, Milton PA

A rest area for migratory waterfowl and songbirds, Milton State Park is 82 acres on Montgomery Island on the Susquehanna River, just west of where you may be looking for Milton homes for sale. Take PA-642 W/Mahoning St. to Willow St. Head for the forested southern part of the island, as the northern part is developed for day use and is heavily used by families, soccer players, and picnickers. Among the migrants seen in spring are the golden-winged warbler, the long-haul flying Canada warbler, and the boldly colored yellow-throated warbler.

5. Montour Preserve - 374 Preserve Road, Danville PA

More than 240 species of birds have been observed in this small preserve. They include waterfowl glimpsed on Lake Chillisquaque, as well as shorebirds, songbirds, and birds of prey, including the great-horned owl, osprey, and red-shouldered hawk. You might also glimpse the graceful white-throated loon in the marsh during the winter, after it spends summers breeding in the Arctic. If you've chosen a home among Danville homes for sale, it's a straight shot north on PA-54 W/Continental Blvd., then right on Washingtonville Road and north on Pp and L Road to 1006 (Preserve Road).
