Go Hiking This Summer in the Susquehanna Greenway

CENTURY 21 Mertz & Associates August 4, 2024

Did you know that a full display of nature's glory is waiting for you just minutes from Lewisburg homes for sale? Explore these top trails along the 500-mile corridor of the famed Susquehanna Greenway.

  • Mocanaqua Trail – On the Mocanaqua Trail, all paths lead to Penobscot Mountain. Moc Loop, a nickname bestowed by locals, is comprised of the Brown Loop, Orange Loop, Green Loop, and Blue Loop. The four trails vary in length and difficulty but take hikers to picturesque views of the Susquehanna River along with surrounding mountains and communities.
  • Yost Run Trail Loop – Clear your mind and savor the serenity of the Yost Run Trail Loop. Leave the everyday world behind as you take in the sights of colorful flowers, tall trees, and Yost Run Falls, a small but scenic multi-level cascade surrounded by moss-covered rocks. Trail length is seven miles and best suited to hikers with some experience due to some steep climbs, as the trail has a total elevation of 1,000 feet.
  • Hyner View Trail – When the word "view" is in the name, you know you're in for something spectacular, and the Hyner View Trail doesn't disappoint. Stunning views of the Susquahanna River and surrounding forests below make the spot a favorite of hang gliders and photographers as well. The route is only 5.2 miles round-trip, but it's recommended for more skilled hikers thanks to the significant elevation gain. Those who are up for an even greater challenge can proceed along the 16-mile loop trail network.
  • Hawk Rock Overlook – Ready to dip your toe into the legendary Appalachian Trail? The Hawk Rock Overlook is an easy two-mile trail that provides a nice entry into the 2,190-mile AT. Some points on the trail are rocky, so watch for the helpful white blazes that will help you stay on track. For a different perspective, continue on to the Cove Mountain Overlook.
  • Darlington Trail – The Darlington Trail, originating at the junction of the Appalachian and Tuscarora Trails, is completely contained within the boundaries of State Game Lands 170. Orange blazes along the way make the route relatively easy to follow. Hikers are cautioned to watch for an intermittent stream crossing in Bryson Hollow, where high runoffs can make it impassable. The Darlington Trail is also popular during fall months when leaves drop from trees to reveal views of Blue Mountain.
  • Bald Eagle Mountain Trail – Don't forget to take a bird-watching guide along when you hike the Bald Eagle Mountain Trail. The nine-mile round-trip route is known as a prime location for spotting golden eagles and other migrating birds. You're also likely to encounter "birds" of another type, as hang gliders are often soaring overhead. Views below include Lock Haven, the county seat of Clinton County, and the West Branch Susquehanna River.
  • Rhododendron Trail – The 1.2-mile Rhododendron Trail presents a moderate level of difficulty, but hikers are rewarded with a number of fascinating sights along the way. Just to the right of the trailhead sits the James B. Longhouse, which dates back to 1850. As you continue, you'll see the Neel Homestead Foundation, remnants of the home built by Revolutionary War veteran Thomas Neel. Pass by a massive old-growth beech tree and through the thickets of the namesake flower before you complete the trail.
