January can be cold and snowy, but it can also be a beautiful time of year to spend some time outside. Luckily, the Danville area has a lot to offer in terms of outdoor activities. Whether you love sledding, winter hiking, or making snow angels, here are some family-friendly outdoor adventures our real estate agents recommend.
Hess Recreation Area: 843 Meadow Lane, Danville, PA 17821 – Pay a visit to the Hess Recreation Area. This 102-acre preserve features 3.9 miles of trails, many of which are open through the winter for cross-country skiing and hiking. There are also year-round restrooms, making this a great destination for families with kids. The Hess Recreation Area is mostly wooded, and it's a great spot to see wildlife in January. You can expect to see birds out and about on warmer days.
Montour Preserve: 374 Preserve Rd. Danville, PA 17821 – The Montour Preserve is another great place to visit for hiking or snowshoeing in the winter. The Preserve was founded in 1972 and is one of the best-maintained public outdoor areas in Danville. The visitors's center is open Monday - Saturday from 8:00 - 4:00. There are maps in front of the Visitor's Center that can help you find your way around. Keep an eye on the Preserve's event calendar, too. Sometimes, they have educational activities and events for kids.
North Branch Canal Trail: River Dr., Danville, PA 17821 – The North Branch Canal Trail is a lovely walking trail that's open for hiking and cross-country skiing in the winter. It's beautiful in January; you'll enjoy stunning views of the snow sitting on tree branches all along the trail. This trail is 6.2 miles long, which is a good distance for a moderate but approachable ski session. Since it's relatively flat, it's a good choice for older kids and beginner skiers. The trail is about 5 feet wide, so there's plenty of room to pass. Dogs are allowed, but they must be leashed, and the trail is open from dawn to dusk.
Memorial Park: Bloom Rd., Danville, PA 17821 – If you're looking for a quieter, more subdued way to spend time outdoors, pay a visit to Memorial Park. This is a small but gorgeous public park along Bloom Rd. There are paths you can walk in the winter, along with several monuments and sculptures to admire. Make sure you return to Memorial Park in the spring or summer, too!
