Take a Hike at These Parks Around Central PA

CENTURY 21 Mertz & Associates June 22, 2020

Summer is a truly beautiful time to be in Central Pennsylvania. And with a wealth of parks and trails ripe for exploration, our real estate agents are eager to get out there and explore. If you're looking for some quality time in the great outdoors, be sure to check out these great spots for hiking near Danville, PA!

  • Geisinger Stewardship Forest - Powder Mill Rd., Danville, PA 17821

Nestled on a 300-acre tract of land behind Danville's Geisinger Medical Center, the Geisinger Stewardship Forest is a great close-to-home hiking destination. The forest has 8 miles of trails, which are maintained on a volunteer basis by local hiking enthusiasts. Just minutes from these Danville homes for sale, these trails provide an easy opportunity to appreciate the wooded hills of Central PA. The relatively easy terrain also makes it a good spot to introduce kids to hiking.
  • North Branch Canal Trail - River Rd., Danville, PA 17821

A labor of love and a continuing work in progress, the North Branch Canal Trail follows the course of the former North Branch Canal between Danville and Catawissa. At the time of publication, about 3.5 miles of this planned 6.2-mile trail have been completed, and you can access it from River Road, just outside the village of Danville. Physical remnants of the canal itself have mostly disappeared into the landscape, and the trail weaves in and out of shady woods and open farmlands.
  • Raymond B. Winter State Park - 17215 Buffalo Rd., Mifflinburg, PA 17844

Raymond B. Winter State Park is a major hiking destination, serving as something of a hub for Pennsylvania hikers. The park itself contains 6.3 miles of trails, which lead across lush valleys and rugged ridge tops. Many of these trails extend into nearby Bald Eagle State Forest. Located a stone's throw from many Mifflinburg homes for sale, the park is also the central trailhead of the Mid State Trail, which stretches 327 miles across the state, and is one of Pennsylvania's premier backpacking routes.
  • Dale's Ridge Trail - T450, Lewisburg, PA 17837

A 2.3-mile loop, the beautiful Dale's Ridge Trail packs a lot of great scenery into its relatively short length. The trail is accessible through the 137-acre Dale/Engle/Walker property, just down the road from these Lewisburg homes for sale. With dense forest, steep climbs, and panoramic views of Buffalo Valley and the Buffalo Creek Floodplain, the trail offers a great afternoon mini-adventure.
  • Montour Preserve - 374 Preserve Rd., Danville, PA 17821

Nestled on the banks of Lake Chillisquaque, the Montour Preserve is home to a 3.9-mile loop trail that encircles the lake, as well as several shorter spur trails. Traversing fields, woods, and wetlands, this trail system also offers some of the best bird-watching opportunities in the part of the state. Geese in particular visit the area in incredible numbers during their spring and fall migrations, and you can watch them from several observation blinds along the preserve's trails. The lake offers excellent fishing as well.
  • Milton State Park - 205 PA-642, Milton, PA 17847

Milton State Park occupies a large 82-acre island, mid-stream on the West Branch Susquehanna River. It lies between the boroughs of Milton and West Milton, and just minutes from these Milton homes for sale. While it may not offer the most challenging hike in the region, the park's 3.5-mile trail system is well-maintained, offering a relaxing stroll through the park's lovely wooded river island habitat.
